About Picayune Toys

My daughter, Jennifer and I opened the first Picayune Toy Store in the fall of 2002. We grew quickly and 3 years later we moved across the parking lot to a larger space.

Every one wants to know how our name “Picayune Toys” came about. I was born and raised in Shelby, NC. When I was a little girl I would sometimes turn my nose up at something my mother would put on the table for supper. She would give me “the look” and say “Becky, don’t you be a picayune (pronounced pick-a-ewe-knee).” To me that meant don’t be picky, and to eat my supper.

Because Picayune Toys opened its doors in a space that was less than 1100 square feet, we thought the name was appropriate. Picayune actually means small or picky. We were small and we were picky about our toy selection. We’ve grown, but we are still “picky about our toys. We strive to have the best selection of specialty toys available. Come visit us.
